Dear Camp Westminster Campers, Families and Alumni,
Over the past weeks and months, we have monitored the COVID-19 pandemic very closely, following the public health experts at the CDC and the State of MI and the American Camp Association (ACA) to understand how it may impact our 2020 summer season. We have put an incredible amount of effort into planning and considering every measure possible to ensure the health and safety of our camp community. In doing our part to keep our camp community safe, we have made the painful and difficult decision to suspend all of the traditional overnight and day camp sessions at Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake for the summer of 2020.
This is a decision that the staff and camp board have made after much research and consultation. It makes us very sad. We have spent weeks trying to figure out how to do this safely. We realized that even if we could have camp it would not be the Camp Westminster that we all know and love.
Camp is about community, connection and bringing people together. This summer, we simply do not feel that coming together is safe. While it is heartbreaking to say, we also feel that this is the best decision to protect campers, staff, the Higgins Lake and Roscommon communities, and the broader communities to which we all belong. If you are registered for camp we will be sending you more details shortly.
We know that our children and grandchildren will grieve this loss of time on the beautiful shores of Higgins Lake with fun, caring staff and trusted friends as much as much as we are.
We know that you will be looking for ways to enrich your children’s summer and provide time with other campers and counselors to get together. We know that you need a safe place to be with your family and to be outdoors. We know that young people have a great desire to help others and share their gifts with children and youth.
So we are in the process of re-imagining and re-inventing the summer of 2020! This will be a summer like no other! For the last two weeks we have been hosting Camp Westminster at Home with an extremely talented and caring staff. There have been energizers, scavenger hunts, yoga, outdoor cooking, painting sessions, Mad Libs and so much more!. Register at campwestminster.com to learn more and receive the password for The Stump (portal for video and Zoom links) and join in the fun. It is free and will give you a little taste of what we are planning for “A Summer Like No Other!”
This is our 95th summer and Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake is 95 Strong! We are “Rich in Lore and Tradition Deep.”
We will continue to hold all of you in our thoughts and prayers during the coming weeks and months and trust that you will learn new ways to trust the God that holds your right hand! We look forward to greeting you in person and sharing these experiences in the summer of 2021.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Getz Bates Executive Director Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake
